Commissioning a bespoke bar billiards table is a collaborative process, and like all good collaborations, it begins with a conversation.
At Bruno Boulay, no handmade bar billiards table is held in stock. Every piece is made to order, designed around the room it will inhabit and built by hand in our Berkshire workshop. The journey from first enquiry to final installation is one we guide you through at every stage.
For those who have never commissioned furniture before, the process is more straightforward, and more rewarding, than it might first appear.
The First Conversation
Every commission begins with understanding the room.
We talk through the space, the way it is used, the architecture around it and what you would like the table to be. There is no obligation at this stage; the first step is simply to understand the project well enough to advise on timber, scale and approach.
For interior designers and architects, this is also the stage at which we discuss palettes, proportions and CAD drawings, ensuring the table is resolved within the wider scheme from the outset.
Timber, Finish and Cloth
Once the proportions are understood, the materials follow.
Every bespoke bar billiards table is crafted from carefully selected American Black Walnut or European Oak, chosen for the room it will inhabit. Walnut reads as warm and dramatic; oak is denser and more architectural. We provide samples of both, finished in the same way they will be finished on the table, so the decision can be made against the actual materials of the room.
The playing surface is dressed in Hainsworth heritage cloth, available in a considered range of colourways from burgundy and forest green to quieter slates and neutrals. The cloth is chosen to belong at the scale of furniture, not a sports accessory.
Detailing, solid brass, brushed steel, leather cushions and hand-finished resin, is fitted by hand, so every component reads as part of the same considered object.
Drawings and Approval
Before any wood is cut, the design is drawn and agreed.
We produce drawings that resolve the silhouette, the proportions, the scoring layout and the detailing. These are reviewed and refined until you are entirely satisfied, and only then does the table enter the workshop's schedule.
This stage is what separates a bespoke commission from a catalogue purchase. The table is designed for your room, not adapted to it, and the drawings ensure that what is made is exactly what was agreed.
The Workshop
Once approved, the table is built by hand in our Berkshire workshop.
The timber is selected, acclimatised and worked using traditional cabinet-making techniques. The cabinet is made, the joinery is resolved, the surface is finished by hand and the playing field is engineered to a precise tolerance. Nothing is rushed, and nothing is left to assumption.
A bespoke bar billiards table is typically made over a period of several months, depending on the specification and the workshop's schedule. We agree a realistic timeline at the outset and keep you informed through each stage of the build.
Installation
When the table is finished, our own team installs it.
We install throughout the United Kingdom, levelling the playing surface and dressing the cloth on site so the table plays true from the first game. Because installation is carried out by the workshop, the same hands that make the table set it up in your room.
For installations involving difficult access, we discuss the logistics in advance so that there are no surprises on the day. The table arrives as a piece of furniture, and it leaves our care only when it is playing and sitting exactly as it should.
A Table Made to Be Kept
A bespoke bar billiards table is not a purchase that is replaced. It is a piece of furniture made to be kept.
The joinery, the timber selection, the hand finishing and the fitting of every component are carried out to the standards of cabinet making, which means the table ages well, can be repaired if necessary and is far less likely to be replaced. This is the difference between furniture that is bought and furniture that is commissioned.
Long after the room around it has changed, a handmade bar billiards table from our workshop continues to define the space with quiet confidence.
